More and more people are switching to natural products to avoid harmful chemicals that surround us in our day-to-day life. If you are among those who are conscious of what their body is exposed to on a regular basis you might consider some changes in your daily personal care routine too.
Even such basic bathroom products like your mouthwash can have undesired effects if used for an extended time period.
You must have seen the endless ingredient list on the labels of the big dental hygiene brands. There are numerous mystery compounds that you likely can’t even pronounce. Different kind of colorants, preservatives, chemical compounds, and the list goes on… The long-term side effects of many of these relatively new substances are not even known yet. Even if you buy mouthwash from pharmacies or organic stores they can still have these 3 common ingredients to watch out for: alcohol, CPC, and fluoride.
Finding a good brand that doesn’t list alcohol in the ingredients is nearly impossible.
Alcohol is known to cause dry mouth which is a prerequisite for cavity formation. A natural alternative doesn’t inhibit saliva production which can be a relief for people suffering from a dry mouth condition. Another issue with alcohol is that it doesn’t make a selection between good and bad bacteria when it takes action. Microbe imbalance is bad for your oral flora. It can lead to bad breath and other complications on the long run. An alcohol-free mouthwash may not be that efficient in killing all the bad bacteria like a chemically fortified version, but will certainly protect good bacteria in your mouth.
CPC (cetylpyridinium chloride) can sound also familiar for people who read toothpaste and mouthwash labels. Even though CPC is a very common ingredient of the store-bought mouthwashes, it stains your teeth over time and can also be toxic in high doses.
It’s better to choose an all-natural chemical free mouthwash which does the job just as well like the store-bought product.
Another frequently added compound of most well-known mouthwash brands is fluoride. The dangers of fluoride may include acne, thyroid issues, and even cognitive disorders such as ADHD.
Recently, there has been a lot of controversy about fluoride due to its presumed neurotoxic properties. It is thought to cause IQ deficits in early development therefore pregnant mothers should be particularly wary of its excess intake.
Unlike the conventional product, a natural mouth rinse is packed with healthy goodness that come directly from Mother Earth instead of a lab.
A chemical-free natural mouthwash is more gentle for your mouth. You will not feel that burning sensation again since it completely free from alcohol.
On top of that, the botanical ingredients will sooth sensitivity while giving you a fresh breath. Baking soda (also known as sodium bicarbonate), one of the key ingredients of natural mouth rinse, has been clinically proven to be an effective agent to kill harmful bacteria. Thymol, an active compound derived from the thyme plant, has powerful antiseptic properties. The fresh botanic scent of thyme will also provide you a clean fresh breath. No wonder that people in Ancient Greece used to grind a piece of dried thyme between their teeth to take its good smell. Due to all these healthy compounds, a natural mouth wash is a perfect solution for preventing gingivitis, removing plaque buildup in teeth, and maintaining optimal oral health.
